Lessons and Classes
At Rare Purls, we take pride in passing along the skills and techniques involved in hand knitting, crochet, hand spinning, and other fiber arts. Kay Mather, our primary needle arts instructor, has over 40 years of experience in needle arts. She offers a wide array of great classes from beginning knitting to advanced garment construction.
Classes are scheduled at your convenience, with no waiting for other students to fill a class. We have 11 a.m., 2 and 4 p.m. time slots available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and a 6 p.m. slot on Tuesday evenings. If you do not see the a class that fits your needs, let us know and we will tailor a private session for you! Beginning Knitting - Full Course
Includes (3) two hour classes, where you will learn the basics of knitting, including the knit stitch and purl stitch, how to cast on (2 different ways), bind off, read patterns, and make fringe. As the new skills are learned, the student creates our Sampler Scarf, an accessory containing five attractive stitch patterns – garter, stockinette, reverse stockinette, seed stitch and double moss stitch patterns. No previous knitting experience necessary.
The beginners knitting course is $85, private rate and $75 per person, small group rate. Materials necessary for the course are 200 yards worsted weight yarn and knitting needles, appropriate for yarn chosen, available at Rare Purls for an average cost of $15 per student.
Introductory Knitting Class
Includes (1) two hour class. During this class you will learn how to cast on, bind off, and the knit stitch, to create a garter stitch scarf. Materials necessary for class are 200 yards worsted weight yarn and knitting needles, appropriate for yarn chosen, available at rare Purls for an average coat of $15. The cost for the class is $35 per person.
Beginning Crochet - Full Course
This course consists of (3) 2 hour sessions and teaches all crochet stitches as detailed in our Introductory Crochet Course (see below), reading patterns and charts, plus techniques for crocheting projects with shaping. The course revolves around the construction of Rare Purls Eco Market Bag, a teaching tool created for this course, crocheted in your choice of yarn. No prior needle arts experience needed. 400 – 500 yards (depending on size of bag desired) of worsted or bulky weight yarn and appropriate size crochet hook are the materials required, available at Rare Purls. $85 private, $75 small group for the 3 sessions.
Introductory Crochet Class
In (1) two hour class, you will learn the 6 basic crochet stitches, including single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, treble crochet, slip stitch and chain stitch, plus combinations stitches, such as shells and V-stitches, and other general crochet techniques. The cost is $35 per person, plus materials.
Beyond the Knit and Purl Stitch
This 3 hour class will take you from novice to an intermediate level of knitting. It teaches combination stitches, full fashioned shaping (paired increases and decreases, a technique used in high end hand knits), basic cable patterns, basic lace stitches and patterns, reading cable and lace charts, picking up stitches along an edge, and reading your knitting. $35/person
Beginning Sock Course
Learn how to make socks using the top down method with two circular needles. This course includes (3) two hour classes and a copy of a sock pattern written specifically for this course. Suggested materials – 425 yards fingering weight yarn and (2) circular needles, both in size US 1, 2, or 3 (depending on yarn.) Materials available at Rare Purls in a wide variety of colors, fibers, and price points. (3) 2 hour classes, $85 private, $75 small group
Toe Up Socks
Our Toe up Sock class is for knitters who want to learn to knit toe up sock patterns. It is suggested either to follow the basic beginner top down sock course or for the more experienced novice level knitter. The (2), two hour classes teach the clever cast on for toe up socks, heel shaping, and tips for knitting using these techniques. Materials – 420 yards fingering or sport weight yarn and (2) circular needles of appropriate size for required gauge. $70 private, $60 semi private
The “Oops” Workshop
Kay's “Oops” Workshop is one of our most popular knitting classes! You will learn to recognize, repair, and in some cases camouflage mistakes, plus troubleshooting techniques. Some of techniques taught are how to:
Repair dropped stitches in several different stitch patterns
Unknit or “tink”
Ripping back using a life line
Reading your knitting for easier corrections
Duplicate stitch to cover up errors, even in colorwork
Plus many more tips and techniques for stress free knitting!
The Oops course is (1) two hour class and there is a swatch to be knitted as homework, before the class. Contact Kay at firstname.lastname@example.org for the homework swatch pattern. $35
Knitting in the Round Workshop
One circular needle, two (or more) circular needles, double point needles, and magic loop (one very long circular needle) techniques are taught. When you learn to knit in the round, so many seams are no longer necessary. No need to seam hats, mittens, fingerless gloves, or even sweaters anymore! This workshop is two hours and costs $35 per person.
Knitted Baby Booties
This 3 hour class teaches how to knit a darling pair of baby bootie socks in DK weight yarn. Learn all of the shaping techniques used in sock knitting in this great new class! For more information, please contact the shop. Private class - $50, small group - $40/person
Cherokee Sister Infinity Scarf Workshop
Learn to knit a quick and easy infinity scarf with a snazzy faubius twist. Cherokee Sister is a Rare Purls Originals pattern, that looks great knit in either solids, muitis, or self striping yarns. This workshop teaches knitting in the round, adding the “fauxbius” twist, an easy lace pattern, and how to make matching loose cast ons and bind offs, important in so many of the new cowl patterns. 2 hours/$35
Flexible and clean seams are so important in both knit and crocheted items. Learn three basic seaming techniques: the mattress stitch, ladder seams, three needle bind off, and either crocheted seams or grafting. Feel free to bring a project that needs seaming. This workshop is a 2 hour session and is $35.
Techniques are learned for dressing up raw edges and bind offs in hand knit items. Hemmed edges, picot bind off, applied I-cord, picked up edgings, and crocheted crab stitch are included. This 2 hour workshop is $35
Cast Ons workshop
Great hand knits begin with great cast ons. Cast ons covered include long tail, knitted, cable, provisional, backwards loop, Kay's fauxbius, and picking up stitches, with instruction as to which techniques are used for different project needs. This 2 hour workshop is $35.
Moebius Cowl Workshop
Learn Cat Bordhi's moebius cast on, the gateway to fabulous cowls and some other interesting projects! Download Cat's free Moebius Cashmere Cowl pattern for class. Project requires 100 grams of yummy, hand painted, sport or DK weight yarn and a 40” US 10 needle. 2 hour workshop -$35
Burberry Inspired Cowl Workshop
Learn to knit front and back cables, make a provisional cast on and how to graft (Kitchener stitch.) The project is the Burberry Inspired Cowl, a free pattern on Ravelry.com. 100 grams of worsted, aran, or bulky weight yarn (available at Rare Purls), a crochet hook, and a US 10 needle required. The workshop consists of (1) two hour and (1) one hour session and is $50 per person.
